New youth project set for the road in Norfolk

SPLAG12010: Two Christian Street Pastors in Dereham have appealed for support for their vision of buying, equipping and running a bus that will be a mobile venue offering shelter, a hot drink and advice to youngsters in the area.

This exciting new project is headed up by Chris Olley and Lyn Milns who have 8 years experience of youth outreach work. The idea for this ministry started in 2002 when Lyn had a vision for this type of outreach; she felt it was important to go out to the young people and it wasn’t long after that God called Chris for the same vision.

The scripture that fuelled their passion for this outreach work was When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Matt 9:36
The Biblical Greek for compassion is Splagcnizomai, hence the reason for naming the project SPLAG.
"The experience and team is already in place, all we need now is the bus," says Lyn. "The SPLAG bus will visit where there is a need and the aim is to involve the local church in any area that it goes, as it’s important for the young people to build relationships with people local to them."

The objectives have always been to go out and reach young people where they are at, building mutual respect and trust. The bus will visit Dereham and surrounding towns and villages as a mobile venue that young people can come to. It may be that they just need shelter and a hot drink, somewhere to socialise with their friends or maybe some initial advice; the SPLAG bus will have leaflets and information available on health matters including drugs, alcohol and STDs. During the summer there will be an outdoor sports programme led by Chris. He says, "As we get established we hope to have a sports cage to take around with us. This type of activity really does work and is enjoyed by the youth."
SPLAG4Once the bus is purchased, a team of people are ready to do the interior conversion and graffiti artists to do the exterior artwork. It is expected that the bus will cost about £5,000 to get on the road. Chris and Lyn said “We have had so many wonderful encouraging words and prophesies for this project and the most important thing that people can do for this project is pray. We know that prayers will be answered”.

They are clear that as the project is God's vision, all the funding will come from gifts from God's people so they do not intend to apply for grants. Lyn said “We know and trust that God will provide and it’s important for us to praise Him for all the provision. Once we are fully operational it is hoped that churches will support our work especially if we are needed in their area”.
Chris and Lyn want to get Christians from local churches involved to help with the listening service on the bus offering young people someone willing to listen to them.
They have people from their churches praying for this vision; Lyn is a member of Dereham Baptist Church and Chris goes to Taverham Evangelical Church and are being greatly blessed by these prayers and prophesies.
