Mid Norfolk church celebrates major renovation
2012: Following years of planning and seven months of building works, St Mary’s Parish Church in Watton is excited to be celebrating a £500,000 refurbishment with an open weekend on 21st – 22nd April.
Rev Geoff Garrett, Vicar of St Mary’s, Watton, said: “The renovation makes the building what it was originally designed to do 800 or 900 years ago - to be a community building.
“The church inside is a strange shape so people couldn’t see what was happening at the altar and you couldn’t see what was happening at the other end of the church. We have brought everything forward so the church feels like more of a community.
“The whole church is multi-purpose. The parishioners are excited about moving back into the church - they cannot wait.”
During the period of the works, the morning services have been held in the Watton Christian Community Centre. A re-opening service led by the Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Rev Graham James, will take place on Sunday 22nd April, 6.30pm.
