Norwich churches mark Jubilee with flowers

Members of eight church groups from different denominations are coming together at the end of September to stage a multi-faith flower festival near Norwich as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

StMatthews450All the churches and groups are in the Thorpe St Andrew, Heartsease and Thorpe Hamlet areas to the east of Norwich and the festival will be over the weekend of September 29-30.
Displays will be mounted in four church buildings - Our Lady Mother of God, the Good Shepherd (part of the Anglican St Andrew’s parish), St Matthews in Thorpe Hamlet (pictured above) and the Witard Road Baptist church where flowers will be provided by the Heartsease Lane Methodists, St Francis’s church and evangelical groups including Norwich Vineyard Church.
For a number of years, members of this group of churches have met together for prayer and Lent study groups.
In 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, the Catholic community from Our Lady Mother of God joined with two churches in St Andrew’s Anglican parish for a three-church flower festival.
Marie Drew, from Our Lady Mother of God, said: “This was very successful. But, it is believed that this is the first time ever that so many of the various denominations in the Thorpe and Heartsease area have worked together on a  project like this.
“The exciting thing about it is that they all want it to be seen as a joint venture - working together!”
Marie said: “Mark the weekend date September 29 - 30 in your diary and come along to see this very special Diamond Jubilee celebration.”
