Fakenham Church festival gathers momentum

Fakenham Christmas Tree FestivThe annual Christmas tree festival at Fakenham Parish Church is gaining popularity year by year, and this year the organisers are gearing up to receive coach parties from all over the UK. Tony Rothe reports.

This year’s festival runs from Thursday November 29 through to Thursday December 6 daily from 10am to 8pm. This is the twelfth year the Christmas tree festival has been held, and it is getting bigger each year.  It is now seen as the highlight of the Church year in Fakenham.
The Church will be lit up by 90 Christmas Trees, each decorated for one of the 78 charities taking part. Entrance is still free, but visitors are asked to bring a bag of coins so that they can donate money at their favourite charity tree(s). Charities range from national charities such as the British Heart Foundation to local schools and nurseries. During the last 10 years over £250,000 has been donated to charity from the festival.
A number of coach companies brought groups to the very successful 2011 event which attracted some 25,000 visitors and raised a total of £26,000 for the charities taking part.  Local radio, television and newspapers all covered the event, including a live broadcast of the BBC Radio Norfolk Breakfast Show and a slot on the Anglia TV evening news.
Throughout the Festival refreshments are available, including reasonably priced lunches and teas using local produce and home made cakes and scones. It is also possible to book lunches for coach parties.  There will be a walk-through Festival Market selling many items for Christmas including Christmas cakes and cards.
We are expecting this year’s festival to be at least a match for last year’s” said Rev Adrian Bell, Rector of the church, “Last year some coaches travelled from as far afield as Hampshire and Durham to be here. We do suggest that coach parties may wish to combine this with a trip to the Christmas Spectacular at Thursford during the festival period.”
During the Festival the town Christmas lights will be on and visitors can enjoy the wide range of shops, as well as visiting the church.  There is ample parking in Fakenham including the Tesco Store nearby which allows 3 hours of free parking.
