Mid Norfolk Christian creates pastoral care tool

Anne-Marie Fewell2013: Mid Norfolk Christian Anne-Marie Fewell is offering local churches an effective way to approach the pastoral care needs of the chronically ill, developed through her own experience with ME.

Anne-Marie Fewell (pictured right), from North Elmham in Mid Norfolk, was studying theology at Spurgeon's College in London before becoming ill seven years ago.

Diagnosed with the debilitating illness M.E. Anne-Marie was bedbound for four years and even now can only make occasional church services with help.

Anne-Marie said: “The Lord has been using the last seven years of illness as a time of learning what it is like to be isolated and housebound and unable to get physically to a church.

“Following conversations with others in similar situations it has become apparent that some churches do not know how to respond to the chronically ill and those who are ill do not know how to make their needs known to the church.”

In order to help churches identify the most appropriate approach to caring for an individual who is chronically ill, Anne-Marie has put together a Pastoral Care Questionnaire that can be adapted to fit the resources and culture of any church.

It is designed to help prevent people who are sick over a long period from feeling abandoned or isolated, by asking in detail how they would like the church to best serve them.

The questionnaire includes 30 practical questions and covers issues such as whether an individual would like to attend church services and events, how they would like to be prayed for, whether they would like practical help such as shopping and help with hospital visits, or to share meals with others in the fellowship.
You are welcome to use and adapt the questionnaire within your church for free.  It can be downloaded by clicking here.
