Norwich church celebrates stained glass restoration

WindowA Norwich church will be celebrating the restoration of its beautiful century-old stained glass window, due to tireless fundraising efforts and the incredible support of the local community.

Many of the windows in Christ Church, Eaton, which is a listed Victorian Church have been in place for circa 100 years. The lead, which forms the tracery deteriorates over time causing buckling and the glass to loosen. In addition, the tie bars, which help anchor the windows to the stone, rust and break.

John Brydon, a member of the church said, "We became aware of the problems in 2011 and particularly the rapid deterioration of the west window due to the very windy conditions over the last winter."

The west window was installed in 1918 and is a particularly fine and much admired example of the work of  Arthur A. Orr of Harrow. The very top of the window depicts Christ the King after whom the church is named, followed in the other sections by various holy men and women. It was given in celebration of his golden wedding by the Norwich industrialist, John Joseph Dawson Paul of Boulton and Paul's.

The estimated cost of restoring this window, the other smaller window at the west end of the south aisle, the south aisle windows and some lesser works on the north aisle windows was £65,000. As the church did not have this money a small team, headed up by John, gathered with the objective of raising this. The campaign which was called ‘Be a Pane’ was launched on Easter Sunday 2013. A request for donations from the local community was made as well as events including Open Gardens, Christmas flower arranging demonstrations and other events and ideas.

John said, "The result was that by the 31 December 2013 we had reached our target of £65,000. This was no mean achievement and is due to the generosity of many people, who gave not only of their money, but time and ideas."

Devlin Plummer Stained Glass Ltd of Great Moulton were commissioned to undertake the work as not only are they specialists in working with glass, both old and new,  but they are also a local firm. Work on the south aisle windows was completed and they were reinstalled before the end of 2013. Work on the west windows and reinstallation was completed by the end of May this year.

A service of celebration will be held on Sunday 8 June to which all who supported have been invited and to join with us in refreshments afterwards. As a church we are extremely grateful to all who supported and who have made it possible, to not only keep the church weather tight but for others to enjoy its peace and beauty and not least, to admire the window glass.

The Rev’d Dr Patrick Richmond, Vicar, said “I am so grateful to all the donors, to John Bryon and the Be A Pane fund-raising team and to the glaziers for the restoration of our west windows. Many visitors and locals have said how they’ve missed them over the past four months. Having lasted for a hundred years, they now have a bright future too and I’m delighted they will enlighten our celebrations this Whitsunday as we gather to give thanks to God and to all who have contributed to the restoration.”

It's definitely good news. Despite the fact that churches aren't popular now, they are the monuments of architecture and they are undoubtfully beautiful. I had to write some essay about historical monuments some weeks ago but I was busy and ordered it on https://assignmentman.co.uk/ I am sure the author expressed the same position.

That's a very important event and that's why I was asked to write an essay about it and its consequences. To be honest, I don't give a shit so Just ask https://rapidessay.com/write-my-assignment.html to write this essay for me.
