Norwich church charity delivers food hampers

ProclaimersHamperTeam450Over 100 hampers have been delivered to families across Norfolk during the festive season following an appeal launched back in October by local church-based community group ‘Love Norwich’.

Each hamper was filled with everything needed for a families Christmas Day food - from mince pies, to packets of stuffing, gravy granules to Christmas pudding. The idea behind the hampers were to deliver ‘Christmas dinner in a box’. A meat voucher was also included so families could buy the perishable items needed for the big meal.
The organisation, founded by Norwich church Proclaimers, has seen a 75% increase in donations from members of the public.
“Many members of our church have also taken the appeal into their work places and asked for colleagues to jump on board with the appeal as well,” said Gemma Neill, Project Manager. “I think members of the community are more aware of the real need for food for some families following increased attention on this subject by both national and local media. Food poverty is an issue on our own doorstep and hopefully these hampers will not only meet a practical need for local families, but also let them know they are valued members of our community who are not forgotten.”
The hampers have been distributed through the organisation’s links with various agencies across the county. John Lee, Under 25’s Services Manager for Norfolk Carers support which was given hampers to distribute to families they work with, said: “We are thankful for the generosity of Love Norwich and its volunteers. Last year our carers really enjoyed the lavish hampers donated by Love Norwich and it’s fantastic to hear that double the number of carers will benefit this year. The hampers provided a welcome surprise and a luxurious treat for people who spend their lives caring for a family member.”
“It’s a sad fact that there are families in Norfolk who struggle to afford food,” said Gemma. “But at the same time it is so encouraging to see the hundreds of Norfolk residents willing to step in the gap and do something so kind for a stranger they may never meet. At its heart, Christmas is all about giving.”
