Wymondham Abbey development ready to open

It’s been 17 years in the planning, five years of fundraising, 18 months in the building, but is very nearly complete.  The Wymondham Abbey development project is almost at the end of the building phase.

The Abbey now has wonderful new facilities, including meeting rooms, education spaces, a servery and toilets. As well as the buildings themselves, the project has provided a range of displays to explain the 900-year-old Abbey and its role in the town through nine centuries. It’s also made the unique parish archives much more accessible and some of these date back 700 years.

The new facilities will be launched during a thanksgiving and dedication service on Sunday November 15, to be conducted by the Rt Revd Dr Alan Winton, Bishop of Thetford

This will be followed by a private reception for everyone who worked so hard to bring the original vision to fruition.

One of the team, Brian Randall, said: "Without the hard work and dedication of so many people, from the architect right through to the stonemasons and carpenters, we wouldn’t have these stunning additions to our glorious building, so it seemed fitting that we say ‘thank you’ in an appropriate manner."

The new facilities will be open to the public on Monday November 16, from 10am. The Abbey is open every day from 10am until 4pm during November, so do pop along and see all the enhancements for yourself.
