International concert begins Norwich church's bicentenary

Princes Street United Reformed Church, in Norwich's city centre, will welcome a choir from Denmark to perform a concert that will begin a series of special events, marking the church’s 200th anniversary.

On Saturday, July 13, 7pm the classical choir Lille MUKO from Copenhagen will perform at Norwich’s Princes Street United Reform Church (URC) in a free-entry concert to mark the start of the church’s bicentenary celebrations.
Minister of Princes Street URC, Rev John Potter, said: “We are delighted to host this concert, and we are really looking forward to hearing an international choir. The church often has concerts, but this promises to be something quite special – it’s a fitting way to celebrate 200 years of the worship and mission of our church.”
The choir, which is associated with the University of Copenhagen, frequently performs its trademark interpretation of Danish songs and hymns at official events. Lille MUKO consists of current and former music students and other qualified singers, a combination that has enabled the choir to stay in the Danish choral elite since its inception in 1967, offering a musically stimulating and socially attractive environment for singers.
Rev Potter said: “The choir have kindly offered to perform for free so there is no entrance charge, but it is hoped that people will wish to give generously to the church’s three chosen charities. Donations will be shared between Hope into Action and Build both of which have offices based in the church premises. The third recipient will be the church itself which is facing considerable bills to repair the roof.”
Other events to celebrate the bicentenary will be the Heritage Open Days in September when the church will be open with displays about its history for both weekends. This will also see the launch of a photography exhibition “Seeing the Way” produced by Minister, Rev John Potter, who is a former professional press photographer.
On Sunday, December 1, 200 years to the day from the first service in the church, Rev Nigel Uden, one of the Moderators of the General Assembly of the United Reformed Church, will lead worship attended by all five of the URC congregations in the Norwich area.
